Roque Nublo means “Clouded Rock” in Spanish

You see the people on Gran Canaria, one of the two most populated islands of the Canaries, have a good sense for giving things on their island proper names. Roque Nublo is one of the highest points of the whole island (with 1,813 metres actually the second after Pico de las Nieves), and thanks to its characteristic shape at the peak it is also the most visited mountain on Gran Canaria and one of the island’s best known symbols. Like everything else on the Canary Islands, Roque Nublo has volcanic origin and its age is estimated to 4.5 million years.

Visiting Roque Nublo on Gran Canaria

Climbing almost to the top of Roque Nublo is well possible. You will have to drive a long way through the serpentines and narrow roads into the inlands of Gran Canaria, but the sceneries are absolutely worth it. There is a small parking place not far from the peak of Roque Nublo. You should be able to get to the rock itself in 30-45 minutes. The hiking is moderately difficult (there are a few places where you have to climb on small rocks). Climbing on the very top of the rock (80 metres tall) is not possible for normal visitors.

On the Clouded Rock be prepared for clouds

As the name suggests and the picture demonstrates, you should be prepared for any kinds of weather when going to Roque Nublo. Don’t be fooled by the sunshine at the coast. The inlands of Gran Canaria are just a totally different world – and remember you are going to more than 1,700 metres above sea level.
